Social Media Top Ten

Cross-posted from the CustomScoop blog

Because I’ve been away from blogging for a few days, the time feels right for another edition of the Social Media Top Ten.

As always, the top ten (the invention of our friend Bryan Person) is simply a list of ten items catching my attention in the realm of social media this week. I urge everyone to join the fun and create lists of their own!

Social Media Top Ten List

1) A&P plays Goliath – Stuff like this always kills me; I’m certainly not a PR expert by any means, but how do you spin a lawsuit against a couple of college kids? I can see that the YouTube video causing all the trouble doesn’t necessarily shed a positive light on A&P’s produce department, but where’s their sense of humor? Wouldn’t it have made more sense to just “go with it,” maybe spotlight the two kids as talented filmmakers, and make sure they added a little reminder that the video is a parody?

2) So, what’s the deal with Quechup? – And why aren’t I invited?! I kid, the last thing I need is another social network. But let me ask those of you out there with profiles up on every network in existence: do you actually use them all?

3) Marie Digby – CustomScoop’s Jen White posted about this today, I suggest you read her post for an interesting case study in transparency and clever marketing.

4) Next generation of iPods – Personally, I’m with BL Ochman. I won’t be getting in line for an iTouch until they upgrade it a couple of times at least—and lower the price.

5) Facebook goes public – Well, not like that. But the site is opening its doors to public searches. Have you adjusted your privacy settings yet?

6) Twitter has been down all day today. It has been highly traumatic, I’m not sure I’m prepared to discuss it—why do I feel like Twitter will make the top ten list every week? And when will a new platform come along that will challenge its authority?

7) Shel vs. PR Haters – Shel Holtz had a terrific post last week dealing with blogger Tom Coates’ rant against PR pitches. Personally, despite the fact that the post was excellent, I don’t think Shel really needed anything other than his headline. “Bloggers get pitched. Get used to it.”

8 ) Social Network Aggravation Aggregation – Topaz Partners’ Sandy Kalik and I met at last week’s Social Media Breakfast and discussed the need for a “central location” for all our networks. She later directed me (via Twitter, of course) to this Mashable post from July, an aggregator directory. Now the only question is..which one do I choose?

9) Animoto – For a small fee, this terrific site will take your photos and your music and make you a custom made music video montage. Who doesn’t like a montage?

10) Rubel’s “Geek Marketer” idea – Steve Rubel hasn’t always been “doing it for me” as of late, but this post piqued my interest. What’s your take, is there a new position in companies looking for someone who speaks geek?
