A Closer Look at Peoplejam

Despite not being able to head out to California for DEMO this year, I couldn’t let Nate have all the fun of reviewing the technologies involved. So let’s take a look at peoplejam.

Company Name: Peoplejam

Founders: Media and entertainment executives Matt Edelman and Robert Tereck

Website: http://peoplejam.com

Mashable Coverage: Here

First Impression: “If you want a great career, exciting relationships, lots of money and a fantastic body, don’t wait.” Reaching a little, eh? PeopleJam reminds me of a mashup of the entire self-help section of Barnes&Noble set loose on the Internets. I like their ambition, but my first impression is that one social site can’t necessarily help me whittle off those last pesky (mumble mumble) pounds, fill my coffers with shoe money, find me a boyfriend, and bring me to my higher power all at the same time.

Pros: For starters? It’s free. And for a site that sets out to do this much, that’s key. Also? They believe in what they’re doing. For real. There’s a sense of enthusiasm on every page, spend enough time there and you just might feel inspired to at least pick one of their self improvement communities and try it out. The site lets you build a social networking profile much like MySpace or Facebook, including a section to post goals and stories, a blog and connection comments. I enjoyed the multimedia content most of all, as the life experts post videos with advice on…well…everything you could possibly think of.

Cons: Have I mentioned they try to do too much? Back when I used to diet (otherwise known as “always, and unsuccessfully”) (or rather, “mmm, Cherry Garcia…”), they always say, no matter which diet you are on, “set one goal at a time.” Trying to tackle everything all at once isn’t the best way to go, and there’s just a lot going on with PeopleJam. I was also surprised that their online newsroom doesn’t appear to have many social media elements. No SMR, no official PeopleJam blog (though the coaches and experts do have their own pages with blogs) or podcast…the social media site seems lacking in the social media department.

I’ll have to ask Nate if he has video from PeopleJam from DEMO; in the meantime, check it out for yourself. Can self improvement really be but a few clicks away? In the meantime…(”Mmm, Cherry Garcia..mmm.”)
