Utterz! (Another PodCamp Takeaway)
As I stated in my PodCamp wrap-up post yesterday, there were a few memes floating through the halls at PodCamp Boston. Monetization, personal reputation management, the new rules for public relations, and the power of community all caught my attention.
I also heard repeated chatter, both in person and all over Twitter, of the new micro-conversation tool Utterz. I was on the go and interacting with actual humans (for once!) instead of my computer for most of the weekend, so I didn’t get a chance to sign up for Utterz until today–and naturally, I’m hooked already.
Scott Monty argued in a recent post that the power of the PodCamp may speed adoption for Uttez, as SXSW did for Twitter, but I’m not so sure. The beauty of Twitter lies in the simplicity, and while the ease of use is tops for Utterz, newbies may be scared off by the multimedia elements of the site.
Utterz lets you share photos, video, audio and text in a simple post (called an “utter”), and then to easily share it on any of your other sites with widgets and players for your blog or social networking site (I’ve already added the app to my Facebook page, for example).
I think the reason I’m so fond of this tool already is purely selfish–I’d like to improve my public speaking abilities, either when appearing on podcasts, or potentially presenting at a future PodCamp, and Utterz is a perfect tool for recording short little “brain-dumps” and then listening back to see how many “Ums” and “you knows” made their way in. I get to practice sounding better, AND play with a fun little new social media tool, all in one. As Ebert might say, “two thumbs, WAY up!”
Here’s an Utter I recorded this morning about a “conflict of brand interest” between Dove and Axe:
