Plaxo

Still out of it with a cold, I decided to use today as a catch-up day. I had a huge pile of business cards sitting on my desk, and knew I needed to capture that info somewhere. Outlook is out of the question, as I wanted the following features:

1. Accessibility- I want to enter my contacts once and be able to access them from anywhere. That could be on my laptop at home, at work, on my blackberry, on someone else’s phone, etc.

2. Standalone Functionality- Though I can completely understand and see the strength of combining email with contact management, I don’t want that. I want my contacts separate from my email client.

3. Multiple import options- I have a linked in account, a gmail account, Outlook contacts, etc., and the entire point of the excercise is centralized organization of my contacts. With that said, I want my contact manager to be able to import my contacts from all the sources I use.

Plaxo satisfies all of these conditions, and it is free.

The Good:

As a simple contacts manager, plaxo executes well on the features offered. The interface is ajaxy, and is very easy to use.

The Bad:

No field for twitter id? Really?
I have yet to figure out how to access my contents from a mobile device. When I sign in on my blackberry, I go to Address Book and just get a completely blank screen.

The Verdict:

If I can get the mobile access working correctly, I’ll be very happy with Plaxo’s offering. But if I can’t get that going, forget about it.
