What Is Media Discovery?
I’ve been a real slacker lately over at the matchmine blog, so today I posted an entry entitled “What Is Media Discovery?” Here’s a short snippet of it. Check out the rest on the matchmine blog.
After watching the presentations at TechCrunch50 and DEMOfall 2008, I was surprised at how often I heard the term “discovery” used to describe how companies plan to connect users with the media they are looking for. That’s a good thing.
A little over a year ago when matchmine launched at DEMOfall 2007, we were trying to decide how to describe what we do. We didn’t want to say “we’re a recommendation engine”, as that’s only a small part of what we do. Also, when people hear “recommendations” they think of Amazon.com-like “people that bought this also bought this other item” suggestions. So we decided to use the term “discovery.”
Telling people that we were in the discovery game was almost always met with a confused look and a question of “what’s that?” That’s a great question. And it’s a question that I’m going to try to answer here…..and without marketing buzzwords and ambiguous concepts. Note that I said I’d try.
